Significant Flu Season Emerges in Berlin Amidst Other Illnesses

Sat 8th Feb, 2025

The flu season is in full swing in Berlin, with a notable increase in influenza cases compared to previous years. According to the latest report from the State Office for Health (Lageso), over 2,000 influenza cases were recorded in a single week, marking only the second time this has occurred since the 2022/2023 season. In contrast, only around 775 cases were reported during the same period last year.

The report covers the week from January 27 to February 2 and indicates a robust influenza season ahead, as stated by Lageso. The flu season, defined by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), began at the end of December and has since intensified across Germany.

In addition to flu, other viruses such as COVID-19 and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) continue to circulate. However, COVID-19 case numbers have declined since the start of the year, as evidenced by a decrease in detected virus levels in wastewater samples throughout Berlin.

With multiple pathogens circulating that share similar symptoms, there has been a surge in demand for combination rapid tests that can detect influenza, RSV, and COVID-19 simultaneously. According to a representative from the Berlin Pharmacists' Association, many pharmacies report a high demand for these tests, which are also available in drugstores.

Experts recommend that individuals experiencing cold-like symptoms consider using these rapid tests for preliminary assessments. However, for hospitalized patients or those at high risk, PCR testing is advised for more reliable results.
