A tragic shooting occurred at Florida State University in Tallahassee, where a 20-year-old male opened fire, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuring at least six others. The assailant, identified as Phoenix Ikner, utilized a firearm that was previously issued to his mother, who serves as a deputy sheriff in the local area.
The incident unfolded around midday local time, causing chaos as students fled the scene, particularly from the student union. Eyewitnesses described harrowing moments, with reports of a young man exiting a dormitory wielding a handgun. Some witnesses likened the sound of gunfire to that of automatic weapons.
Authorities confirmed that the two victims were not affiliated with the university, while Ikner, a student at the state university, sustained injuries during the altercation and is currently receiving medical care. A motive for the shooting has yet to be determined.
Prior to the attack, Ikner reportedly posted an ominous message on social media, referencing a biblical quote that warns of impending judgment. He had also made disparaging comments regarding students protesting the outcome of the 2024 presidential election.
Sheriff Walt McNeil stated during a press briefing that Ikner had been involved in the local sheriff's department's youth programs and had undergone various training initiatives. He emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting the personal connection of the shooter to law enforcement.
Access to the weapon was facilitated through his mother, as deputies are allowed to retain their service weapons after leaving the force. The firearm was subsequently located on campus.
Students described the frightening moments following the gunfire. Jake Nair, a student, recounted how police rushed into his library, urging everyone to remain inside as they responded to the emergency. Many students, unaware of the unfolding situation, attempted to escape through alternative exits.
Ryan Cedergren, another student, shared his experience of hiding with others in a bowling alley within the student residence as they witnessed peers fleeing from a nearby establishment. He expressed the instinctual drive to focus solely on survival amidst the pandemonium.
Florida State University, located just minutes from the state capitol, serves approximately 44,300 students, making it one of the largest public universities in Florida.
