Bünde, Germany - A devastating fire has left a 77-year-old woman, Rita Maschmann, homeless and without her possessions after nearly five decades in her residence.

The tragic incident occurred at her four-room apartment in Bünde, North Rhine-Westphalia, where Rita raised her three children and cherished countless memories. The fire erupted after she accidentally left a frying pan on the stove while answering a phone call from a friend.

Upon returning home, she discovered her apartment engulfed in flames. Her desperate cries for help from the balcony prompted the swift response of the local fire department, which deployed 80 firefighters to extinguish the blaze. However, the damage was extensive, with charred furniture, blackened walls, and shattered windows marking the remnants of her once cherished home.

Rita has estimated the financial loss at over EUR25,000. Unfortunately, she had canceled her insurance several years prior, believing she would never need it after living without incident for so long. With the passing of her husband, she had been managing on a limited pension, leading her to make the difficult decision to forgo the policy.

Amidst the destruction, Rita mourns the loss of irreplaceable family photographs of her children and her beloved doll collection, alongside everyday items like her coffee machine that she had saved for years to purchase.

To assist Rita in her recovery, her son has initiated a fundraising campaign on GoFundMe. The costs associated with the disposal of the ruined furniture alone are projected to exceed EUR3,800. Rita has expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming support from strangers who have offered to help her during this difficult time.

In the immediate future, she will reside with her daughter until her apartment undergoes renovations funded by her landlord's insurance. Rita remains hopeful to return to her home, where so many memories were made, once it is restored.
