Figure AI Establishes Center for Humanoid Robot Safety

Wed 29th Jan, 2025

Figure AI, a robotics firm known for its humanoid robot Figure 02, has announced the establishment of a dedicated center aimed at enhancing the safety protocols for humanoid robots. The initiative was revealed by the company's lead safety engineer on LinkedIn, emphasizing the importance of developing safety standards that humanoid robots must adhere to for effective collaboration with human workers.

Humanoid robots are increasingly being utilized in industrial settings due to their ability to seamlessly integrate into environments designed for human workers. However, the inherent risks associated with these robots cannot be overlooked, particularly in instances where they may malfunction and pose a threat to human safety. Currently, many humanoid robots lack essential safety mechanisms, such as emergency shutdown features, which raises significant concerns regarding workplace safety.

To address these issues, the newly formed Center for the Advancement of Humanoid Safety will focus on assessing and enhancing the safety of humanoid robots developed by Figure AI. The center aims to create comprehensive norms and guidelines that will facilitate safe interactions between robots and humans. Engineers will evaluate the stability of AI-driven humanoid robots during both stationary and active phases, as well as improve their capacity to detect humans and animals, implement secure AI behaviors, and develop evasive maneuvers to prevent accidents.

Figure AI also seeks input from clients and the broader community to identify additional strategies for enhancing the safety of humanoid robotics. The company plans to formulate robust safety standards based on the collected data and insights. Moreover, Figure AI advocates for the certification of robots tailored to specific applications, highlighting that safety assessments cannot be generalized across different operational environments. For instance, a device designed to detect human presence in an office setting may not suffice in a challenging industrial context.

The robotics company is committed to transparency and plans to release quarterly reports detailing updates and advancements in humanoid robot safety, including any setbacks encountered along the way.

This initiative reflects a growing recognition of the need for stringent safety measures in the deployment of humanoid robots, marking a significant step towards fostering trust and collaboration between humans and machines in the workplace.
