Federal Justice Minister Advocates for Clear Age Restrictions on Social Media to Protect Children

Sun 8th Jun, 2025

In a recent statement, the Federal Minister of Justice, Stefanie Hubig, emphasized the necessity of implementing clear age restrictions for social media platforms to safeguard children and adolescents from disturbing content. Hubig, representing the SPD, articulated that the current landscape often exposes young users to inappropriate material, which raises significant concerns among parents and guardians.

Hubig stressed that establishing definitive guidelines for social media usage is essential for fostering a stress-free environment for children. She pointed out that the pressure of self-presentation on these platforms can be detrimental to their well-being. According to her, a well-defined age limit for social media usage would not only protect children's privacy but also promote healthier developmental outcomes.

Furthermore, Hubig noted that this initiative would alleviate the burden on parents, who frequently find themselves navigating discussions about their children's online activities. The Justice Minister highlighted that initial findings from various countries suggest that such restrictions could have a positive impact on school environments, leading to reduced bullying and enhanced focus among students, as well as improved social interactions.

In light of these concerns, the coalition agreement involving CDU, CSU, and SPD has committed to establishing an expert commission tasked with investigating the effects of digital media on young users. Hubig declared her support for Federal Minister of Education Karin Prien's initiatives aimed at expediting this process, echoing Prien's advocacy for legal age verification mechanisms.

Several European nations have already introduced mobile phone bans in elementary schools, although the regulations vary significantly from one country to another. The discussion on implementing more effective age verification processes for social media users is also gaining traction at the EU level, indicating a growing recognition of the need to protect young individuals in the digital space.
