FDA Issues Caution on Potentially Hazardous Tattoo Inks

Sat 10th May, 2025

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning to both consumers and tattoo professionals regarding two specific tattoo inks that have been found to harbor harmful bacteria, posing a significant risk of infections.

The products in question include:

  • Sacred Tattoo Ink, Raven Black (CI# 77266; Lot#: RB0624, Best Before: June 28, 2027)
  • Sacred Tattoo Ink, Sunny Daze (CI# 21095; Lot#: SD1124, Best Before: Nov. 1, 2027)

Testing conducted by the FDA revealed contamination with bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which can lead to severe skin infections when these inks are injected. Symptoms of these infections may manifest as red rashes, bumps, or lesions and can result in permanent scarring if not treated appropriately.

The FDA emphasized that any breach of the skin's protective barrier increases the risk of infection. Additionally, signs of infection can often be misidentified as allergic reactions, potentially delaying necessary medical intervention.

This contamination was uncovered during a routine surveillance of tattoo products, employing microbiological testing methods generally applied to cosmetics. In light of these findings, tattoo artists and studios are strongly advised to refrain from using or selling these particular inks. Consumers are encouraged to inquire about the inks used in their tattoos to avoid the contaminated products.

The FDA is actively collaborating with manufacturers and distributors to facilitate the removal of these inks from the market. Individuals who experience adverse reactions following a tattoo are urged to seek medical attention and report their experiences through the FDA's SmartHub platform.

For further information on tattoo safety, the FDA provides comprehensive resources on their official website.
