Consumer Groups Warn Against Deceptive Pension Portal Charging Unlawful Fees

Several consumer protection organizations in Germany have issued a warning regarding a fraudulent online platform that closely mimics the official pension information service, yet demands a fee for information that is legally available free of charge. The website in question, operating under the name 'rentnerauskunft.de', has come under scrutiny for misleading users into paying nearly 30 euros for details on their pension entitlements.

According to consumer advocates, the site is run by a company based in London. It requests personal information and payment for providing pension records that individuals can obtain without cost from the official German Pension Insurance (Deutsche Rentenversicherung). The deceptive nature of the site is heightened by its visual resemblance to the official portal, employing similar design elements, colors, and language to mislead visitors.

The consumer centers in Lower Saxony, Thuringia, and Hamburg have all issued alerts in recent days, emphasizing that while the platform does include a disclaimer about having no affiliation with public pension authorities, it is presented in a way that could easily cause confusion. The ordering process is also criticized for lacking transparency; the button to submit a request is simply labeled 'Anfordern' (Request), without clearly indicating that a financial obligation will be incurred by clicking it.

Legal experts consulted by the consumer groups have pointed out that such practices violate consumer protection laws. Specifically, any online service that leads to a payment obligation must clearly communicate this fact before a transaction is completed. Since the website does not meet this legal requirement, affected consumers are not legally bound to pay any requested amounts. The consumer centers have reassured the public that individuals who have inadvertently used the service are under no obligation to settle the demanded fee.

Another significant concern is the platform's requirement for users to submit highly sensitive personal data, such as social security numbers and addresses. Consumer advocates stress that such information should only be shared with legitimate, official agencies to avoid potential misuse or identity theft. They have urged the public to be especially vigilant when providing personal details online, particularly in the context of financial or government-related inquiries.

The official German Pension Insurance offers all insured individuals aged 55 and above a comprehensive pension statement every three years, sent automatically. However, anyone can request this information at any time, free of charge, by submitting an application--either online or in writing--through the official channels. The application process is straightforward, though the official website's URL may not be immediately memorable. Nevertheless, users can easily access the correct service via the main portal of the German Pension Insurance.

Consumer protection agencies recommend that anyone who has interacted with the fraudulent website, or who is unsure about the legitimacy of a pension-related online service, should directly contact a local consumer advice center for assistance. They also advise the public to remain cautious and always verify the authenticity of web platforms before entering any personal or financial information.

The proliferation of online scams exploiting the appearance and credibility of official agencies highlights the ongoing need for public awareness and vigilance. Consumer organizations continue to monitor such activities and provide guidance to protect citizens from falling victim to similar schemes in the future.
