Recent guidelines from health experts highlight that water and plain cow's milk are the top beverage choices for children and adolescents aged 5 to 18. The recommendations stem from a comprehensive review conducted by a panel of experts convened by Healthy Eating Research, a national initiative supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. This panel included representatives from esteemed organizations such as the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Heart Association.
The panel's findings emphasize the importance of hydration, advocating that water should be the primary beverage for children. The recommended daily intake of water varies, ranging from 16 to 88 ounces based on a child's age and sex. Tap water is particularly favored due to its affordability, environmental benefits, and the added fluoride that can help prevent tooth decay.
In addition to water, plain pasteurized milk--especially low-fat or fat-free options--was also endorsed for its rich nutrient profile. While 100% fruit or vegetable juices can be included in the diet, the panel advises limiting these due to their higher calorie content.
Furthermore, the panel cautioned against the consumption of plant-based milks, such as almond or oat milk, stating that they often lack essential nutrients found in dairy, and should only be used as substitutes when medically necessary. Flavored and sweetened milk options are discouraged, as are sugar-laden beverages like sodas and sports drinks, which are not considered part of a healthy diet for youth.
The report also addressed the potential negative effects of caffeinated beverages, noting that they can interfere with sleep patterns, mental well-being, and cardiovascular health. According to a spokesperson from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the selection of healthy beverages is as crucial as choosing nutritious foods for children.
In conclusion, making informed choices regarding beverages can significantly impact the health and development of children and adolescents. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to prioritize water and plain milk while being mindful of the consumption of juices and other drinks.
