Spirit of the Moon
In this spectacular project, the world-renowned conductor Kent Nagano collaborates with musicians from the Philharmonic State Orchestra of Hamburg and the legendary Noh actor Akihiro Yamamoto along with his Noh theater group. Under the title 'Spirit of the Moon', Nagano and Yamamoto combine a Noh play based on the Japanese fable of 'The Rabbit in the Moon' with Arnold Schönberg's 'Pierrot Lunaire', thereby reflecting the essence, aesthetics, and practice of the traditional Noh theater. The high formal and ritualistic constructs of Noh theater paradoxically bring a liberating experience, as Noh master Yamamoto replaces Pierrot with the rabbit, which encounters the spirit of the moon that has descended to Earth to examine the erosion of the value system among its inhabitants. In this way, 'Pierrot Lunaire' gains a universal significance, bridging all cultures and potentially all traditions, as the dreams, imagination, and curiosity of humanity have always been inspired by the mystery and elusive beauty of the moon.
