SPIELART Festival München

The SPIELART Festival in Munich, held from October 17 to November 1, 2025, under the theme "Some kind of tomorrow," gathers artistic positions from contemporary theater forms both domestically and internationally. This festival invites reflection on our current state and future directions--intellectually, physically, and as a community. The program encourages exploration of possible futures, with a focus on forward-looking perspectives, unconventional practices, and new alliances.

Featuring over 30 productions--including 7 world premieres (e.g., UMUNYANA by Cedric Mizero), 5 European premieres (e.g., STORY OF... by Laila Soliman), and 7 co-productions (e.g., YOLDAS - WOMEN WHO SUPPORT EACH OTHER by Nihan Devecioglu)--this fall's festival examines the fractures of our present through the lens of artists who bring global interconnections, personal narratives, and collective memories to the stage.

The festival kicks off with OCEAN CAGE by Tianzhuo Chen & Siko Setyanto at Muffatwerk. Guillermo Calderón presents VACA [COW] at Residenztheater, and nora chipaumire's DAMBUDZO returns to Haus der Kunst. The Münchner Kammerspiele (Serge Okunev and Christiane Rösinger) and the Münchner Volkstheater (Nadia Beugré and Studio Julian Hetzel) are also venues this year. For the first time, three pieces for young audiences of various ages are included in the program.

Other venues include Einstein Kultur, HochX Theater and Live Art, Fat Cat, schwere reiter, Pathos theater, Halle 6, Theatiner Filmtheater, FLORIDA Lothringer 13, Festivalzentrum im Kösk, and Odeonsplatz.

Every two years, SPIELART transforms the city of Munich into a platform for engaging deeply with current socio-political questions. Originally conceived as a counterpoint to the established programs of the city's municipal and state theaters, the festival is now firmly embedded in the city's cultural life and actively engages with its artistic actors and cultural institutions.

Exceptional event formats provide the Munich audience with diverse access points to the festival program: participatory city projects like CITYWORKS (2013), GLOBAL ANGST (2021), or GGGNHM - guggenheim in munich? (2023) and the festival center as a place for gatherings, lively parties, and concerts invite you to become part of the SPIELART community.

SPIELART continuously questions the theater as an art form, exploring and redefining it from its fringes. The festival fosters sustainable relationships with local and international artists and actively promotes the next generation while striving for structural improvements in international theater production.

With 15 festival editions to date, SPIELART has showcased over 500 performances, lectures, and installations--many of which were German premieres or world premieres. Numerous artists and theater collectives, once unknown, have now found a stage at leading European theaters and festivals, including Stefan Kaegi / Rimini Protokoll, Forced Entertainment, She She Pop, Gob Squad, Nature Theater of Oklahoma, Philippe Quesne, and Toshiki Okada.

Founded in 1995 by Tilmann Broszat and Gottfried Hattinger, the festival has been co-directed since 2017 by Tilmann Broszat and Sophie Becker, who took over artistic and festival leadership in 2021.

Tickets will be available for purchase starting September 15. Tickets for performances at the Münchner Kammerspiele and Münchner Volkstheater are available earlier. For the full program and current information, visit: www.spielart.org
