Sesiones Metabólicas: Mercedes Azpilicueta
The Sesiones Metabólicas is a project by the Instituto Cervantes in Munich aimed at promoting contemporary work and the perspectives of Spanish-speaking artists from various nationalities. Inspired by Clémentine Deliss' idea of renewing museums, this project explores new cultural expressions. In 2024, Yara Sonseca curated four exhibitions, while in 2025, Salta Art and curator Florencia Malbrán will present two exhibitions featuring Latin American artists.
The exhibition 'Mercedes Azpilicueta: an Art Student in Munich' connects the proto-feminist perspective of Anna Mary Howitt, who navigated a male-dominated art world in the 19th century, with current issues of equality, diversity, and inclusion. Azpilicueta, an Argentine artist based in Amsterdam, investigates radical education and spirituality in her work. Through performances and sculptural installations, she amplifies marginalized voices and questions established narratives using both artisanal and industrial techniques. Her artistic practice highlights the often-overlooked contributions of women and shows how artists like Howitt challenged societal conventions.
