Ressource, Research, Reset

DG Kunstraum

The exhibition titled Ressource, Research, Reset focuses on the architectural transformation of sacred spaces. It is organized in collaboration with the Chair of Design and Building at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), with the support of the Exhibition House for Christian Art e.V., Munich. The event aims to provoke thought on the use and preservation of church spaces, which serve as significant community hubs and symbols of social responsibility.

Over the years, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für christliche Kunst e.V. has explored various aspects of church building and the design of ecclesiastical spaces. Recent exhibitions, such as Zusammenspiel - Kunst im sakralen Raum and Kirche Raum Gegenwart, challenge audiences to reconsider the identity and role of churches in contemporary society.

The project titled Ressource, Research, Reset emphasizes the architectural potential and cultural significance of church spaces. It comprises student projects from TUM that investigate innovative uses for church buildings in light of declining congregation numbers and the need for their transformation.

Students analyzed the architectural redesign of St. Johannes Church in Ingolstadt, designed by Theo Steinhauser in 1964, aiming to integrate new functions while respecting the existing structure and urban context. Following this, students will focus on St. Mauritius Church in Munich-Moosach, originally designed by Herbert Groethuysen in 1967, exploring residential uses for the building.

The three guiding concepts of the exhibition are Ressource, which highlights the architectural and cultural value of church spaces; Research, which calls for a study of the historical and structural aspects of these buildings; and Reset, which represents a fresh perspective and opportunities for renewal. The exhibition will showcase models, photographs, and drawings that reflect innovative proposals for these important spaces.

The exhibition is part of the Re* lecture series on sustainability in construction and is supported by the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising and the Evangelical-Lutheran Church in Bavaria.
