Ressource, Research, Reset
Join us on Friday, April 18, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM at DG Kunstraum, Finkenstraße 4, 80333 Munich for the exhibition titled Ressource, Research, Reset - Architectural Transformation of Sacred Spaces. This exhibition, supported by the Association Exhibition House for Christian Art e.V. in Munich, is a collaborative effort with the Chair of Design and Building at the Technical University of Munich (TUM).
The German Society for Christian Art e.V. has a long history of engaging with the architecture and design of church spaces. Notable past exhibitions include the traveling exhibition Interaction - Art in Sacred Spaces in 2018, celebrating the society's 125th anniversary, and the recent Church Space Present exhibition in 2023, which encourages a re-evaluation of church spaces as significant landmarks and community gathering places. In modern society, churches often serve as hubs for social engagement, supporting initiatives such as homeless assistance and refugee aid, symbolizing social responsibility and community involvement.
As church attendance declines and the need for church spaces diminishes, it is crucial to develop new concepts for preserving or transforming these significant buildings. Ressource, Research, Reset aims to highlight the quality of church spaces and present innovative uses to maintain them as relevant societal spaces. The project results from a collaboration with Prof. Uta Graff's design chair at TUM, where students have engaged in architectural transformations of church buildings.
This exhibition showcases the outcomes of the students' work on two church projects: the redesign of St. Johannes in Ingolstadt, originally designed by architect Theo Steinhauser in 1964, and the architectural transformation of St. Mauritius Church in Munich-Moosach by Herbert Groethuysen from 1967, which is now under monument protection.
The concepts of Resource, Research, and Reset form the foundation of this project, focusing on the architectural potential and cultural substance of church spaces, the research needed to understand their historical and structural aspects, and the opportunity for a fresh perspective on these spaces.
The results will be presented at DG Kunstraum, offering insights into innovative proposals addressing complex societal questions. The exhibition is part of the Re* lecture series on sustainability in the construction sector and receives support from the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising as well as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria.
