Fünf Freunde. Cage, Cunningham, Johns, Rauschenberg, Twombly
For the first time, the Museum Brandhorst focuses on a group of artists who significantly influenced post-war art across various mediums including music, dance, painting, sculpture, and drawing. John Cage (1912-1992), Merce Cunningham (1919-2009), Jasper Johns (*1930), Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008), and Cy Twombly (1928-2011) created a unique connection through their intimate exchanges. This exhibition features over 150 artworks, scores, stage props, costumes, photographs, and archival materials, providing insights into the interplay among these five artist friends. The Museum Brandhorst highlights Cy Twombly's work, which is a central focus of its collection, in a new light and positions his practice within the artistic context of his early days.
In addition to the exhibition, the Festival Fünf Freunde will take place, featuring dance performances and concerts in the Rosensaal of Cy Twombly, showcasing the works of Merce Cunningham and John Cage.
The opening event will include speeches by Prof. Dr. Bernhard Maaz, General Director of the Bavarian State Painting Collections, and Achim Hochdörfer, Director of the Museum Brandhorst, followed by a party with a DJ set by Jean-Biche from Paris on April 9th at 19:00 (running until August 17th).
