Farben Japans: Holzschnitte aus der Sammlung der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek
The exhibition showcases the artistic excellence and craftsmanship of Japanese woodblock printing, featuring a diverse range of motifs that include expressive theater scenes, charming beauties, urban landscapes, contemplative vistas, and intricate depictions of flora and fauna. Approximately 130 works illustrate the rich cultural and historical connections and distinctive stylistic features of woodblock prints, spanning from the mid-18th century to the shin-hanga, or 'New Prints,' of the 20th century. The original pieces are complemented by thematic stations displaying large-format reproductions that highlight the intricate details of the prints. The exhibition also lightly touches upon the subjects of manga and anime.
