Don Karlos

Münchner Volkstheater – Bühne 1

Spain in the 16th century: King Philip II rules with an iron fist over a vast empire riddled with intrigues and the deadly grip of the Inquisition. Trust is a rare commodity, and the despot's suspicion even extends to his own son, Don Karlos. This mistrust is justified, as the prince's forbidden love for his stepmother, Elisabeth, begins to shake the very foundations of the kingdom. The prince's desire turns into a power struggle that intertwines personal and political ambitions.

Don Karlos' childhood friend, Marquis of Posa, returns to the court from the rebellious Dutch provinces, carrying with him a vision of freedom and tolerance that brings both hope and doom. A web of betrayal, idealism, and destructive passions forms among the powerful, pushing the characters to the limits of their convictions and humanity.

Schiller's "Don Karlos" is more than a historical drama; it is a passionate indictment against oppression and despotism and a plea for the ideals of the Enlightenment, which remain relevant today. In a world torn apart by the pursuit of power and the longing for justice, the play continues to pose existential questions: What does freedom mean, and what price are we willing to pay for it?
