Die Unterlagen befinden sich im Zustand der Ablage

Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte

Join us for the exhibition titled "Die Unterlagen befinden sich im Zustand der Ablage", showcasing the intersection of poetry and administration from the archives of the Künstlerverbund im Haus der Kunst e.V. The event will take place on Monday, 19.05.2025 from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM at the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte, located at Katharina-von-Bora-Str. 10, 80333 Munich.

This exhibition is a collaborative project between the Künstlerverbund im Haus der Kunst e.V. and the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte, part of the Public History München: 1945 - 2025 Stunde Null? Wie wir wurden, was wir sind program by the Cultural Department of the City of Munich.

The Künstlerverbund im Haus der Kunst e.V. is the successor to the Ausstellungsleitung München e.V., established in 1948, which organized the Great Munich Art Exhibitions and over 100 special exhibitions at the Haus der Kunst from 1949 to 2011. They played a major role, alongside the Münchener Secession e.V., the Neuen Gruppe e.V., and the Neuen Münchner Künstlergenossenschaft e.V., in the resumption of exhibition activities in Munich after the end of National Socialism.

The archive of the exhibition management contains documents from 1948 to the present, including correspondence, protocols, exhibitor papers, documents related to the sale and purchase of artworks, loan transactions with private collectors and museums, newspaper clippings, organizational documents for the Munich Artists' Carnival, photographs, clichés, and repro templates, as well as posters and catalogs of exhibitions at the Haus der Kunst since 1949.

The archive, preserved at the Haus der Kunst, is not accessible to the public and has not yet been scientifically processed or evaluated. The materials within offer numerous entry points for art historical research questions, from post-war exhibition practices to art market and provenance research, as well as artists' associations.

The eight artists--Albert Coers, Petra Gerschner, Esther Glück, Andreas Huber, Christoph Nicolaus, Rasha Ragab, Günter Nosch, and Stefanie Unruh--will explore the currently dormant state of the archive and develop diverse works on the theme. Their artistic positions navigate the tension between archiving and art, history and the present, factual historical data and interpretation. Their works will be exhibited in dialogue with selected and commented historical documents and artifacts from the archive, presented publicly for the first time at the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte.

Guided tours will be conducted by art historian Julia Reich and curator Raimund Ritz on March 25 at 11:00 AM, by artist Petra Gerschner and art historian Christian Fuhrmeister on May 13 at 11:00 AM, and by Regina Hellwig-Schmid, President of the Künstlerverbund im Haus der Kunst München e.V., and art historian Julia Reich on June 24 at 11:00 AM.

The exhibition will be accessible from Monday to Friday from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and it will be closed on weekends and public holidays. Admission is free.
