Der zerbrochne Krug

Münchner Volkstheater – Bühne 1

Der zerbrochne Krug by Heinrich von Kleist is a powerful theatrical exploration of coercion, abuse of judicial power, false testimony, and the concealment of facts. For over 200 years, the scandalous case of the unscrupulous judge Adam has been a subject of discussion on German stages. But do we truly know the whole truth? What really happened on that fateful night when the jug belonging to Mrs. Marthe Rull was broken? Who was the shadowy figure that witnesses saw fleeing from the room of Rull's daughter, Eve? Where did the judge's wig disappear to? And in the end, does the devil play a part in this tale?

In Kleist's comedy, the village judge Adam must confront his own complicity as various perspectives vie for the reconstruction of the truth. Under the direction of Mathias Spaan, the narrative transcends the courtroom, cleverly reenacting the multiple versions of that fateful night. As conflicting memories emerge, the certainty of whose perception matters begins to fade. The characters in Kleist's play reflect on this legendary case, revealing how a lack of solidarity can lead to complicity and make the conviction of the guilty impossible.
