Join us for an exciting evening celebrating the release of Bernadette La Hengst's book, "Warum ich so laut singen kann" (Selected Song Lyrics and Explanations, released on April 11, 2025, by Ventil Verlag). The event will feature Bernadette reading from her book, sharing stories, and performing some of her songs live.

This entertaining evening will delve into the work of this exceptional artist, from her beginnings with her all-female band "Die Braut haut ins Auge" to her current projects. Bernadette La Hengst is the most multifaceted figure of the so-called Hamburger Schule. Renowned as "the only German soul singer" (R. Jellen/Junge Welt), a "rebellious life artist" (Der Freitag), and an "agitation chanteuse" (her label Trikont), she has released nearly 20 albums since 1988, whether as a solo artist, with her band, or in collaborative projects like Die Zukunft or the Schwabinggrad Ballett.

Her band "Die Braut haut ins Auge" was unique in the 1990s, not fitting into any mainstream category, making her work too distinctive for the larger market. Bernadette is known for being one of the most interesting and powerful German lyricists, skillfully disguising political discourse as love songs, as in her track "Dilemma". Her autobiographical themes are beautifully captured in the titular song, "Warum ich so laut singen kann". The book features a comprehensive collection of her lyrics, containing 100 pieces along with numerous explanations.

Bernadette will engage in conversation with musician and author Claudia Kaiser, who was once part of Munich's legendary band "The Moulinettes" and promises to be a congenial discussion partner.
