The European Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) platform is set to be discontinued on July 20, 2025, after nearly a decade of service. As of now, the link provided by the European Commission for dispute resolution, which has been a requirement for businesses selling goods and services in the EU since 2016, is no longer operational. According to the European Consumer Centre Germany (EVZ), consumers were able to submit complaints through the ODR platform until March 20, 2025.
With the impending shutdown, new complaints cannot be lodged through the platform. Consequently, businesses that were required to incorporate the ODR link in their terms of service and legal disclosures will need to revise their website's imprint and general terms and conditions (AGB). They will also be expected to offer alternative methods for resolving consumer disputes, depending on their specific industry.
For ongoing support, users can reach out to national contact points, with the EVZ serving as the primary resource for consumers in Germany. The EVZ provides a comprehensive list of mediation services available across Europe tailored for various sectors. In cases where users want to challenge an unjustified restriction on their content or account by an online service provider, they can contact an external and certified dispute resolution body. The European Commission maintains an additional website that is regularly updated to assist consumers.
As per an EU regulation enacted in December 2024 to revoke Regulation No. 524/2013, all user data, including personal information, is required to be deleted by July 20, 2025. Therefore, the EU Commission advises users to export all pertinent data prior to July 19, 2025. Those experiencing difficulties in downloading their data from the ODR platform can seek assistance via email at JUST-EC-ODR-REPEAL@ec.europa.eu.
For consumer-related issues, the 'Your Europe' website offers valuable guidance to users navigating these changes.
