Television: Inspired by Real Events, the Erzgebirg Crime Drama 'Wintermord'

Sat 1st Mar, 2025

A new Erzgebirg crime drama, 'Wintermord', blends fiction with real-life inspirations, set against the backdrop of a significant ski tourism project at Fichtelberg. The narrative unfolds with a shocking discovery: a prominent investor is found dead in his vehicle, launching an investigation led by detectives Robert Winkler and Karina Szabo.

The story begins with an ambitious lift operator from Tyrol proposing a major ski lift project aimed at boosting tourism in the Erzgebirge region. While some community members anticipate economic benefits, others voice concerns about the environmental impact, particularly regarding climate change. The controversial plans face opposition as the lift operator is discovered dead under suspicious circumstances, with a missing briefcase that raises further questions.

'Wintermord' is the eleventh episode in the popular Erzgebirg crime series, airing tonight at 8:15 PM on ZDF, and is set in Saxony's largest alpine ski area in Oberwiesenthal. The filming team encountered challenges during the shoot, as they struggled to capture the picturesque winter landscapes due to a lack of snow. Where the forester, Saskia Bergelt, initially walks through a snow-covered forest to uncover the body, the scenery later appears bleak and brown, with only the ski slopes benefiting from artificial snow.

The plot thickens as the lift operator's death is intertwined with the interests of various characters. Among them are a stubborn landowner reluctant to sell his family's land for the project and a hotel owner eager to attract more visitors. The tension escalates as the investigation reveals deeper connections and rivalries within the community.

Meanwhile, the personal life of Detective Winkler complicates the case. His unresolved relationship with Bergelt adds emotional layers to the investigation. After a long absence on a pilgrimage, Winkler's return sparks tension, especially as Bergelt reconnects with a former love interest, Eric Weber. Winkler's jealousy leads him to investigate Weber's past, uncovering troubling details that cloud the case further.

In this episode, viewers will also notice a cast change. The character of the old forester, played by Andreas Schmidt-Schaller, is absent due to health issues. He is replaced by Thomas Thieme, known for his roles in acclaimed films. Thieme brings experience to the series, having previously appeared in the episode 'Der Tote im Burggraben'.
