Decline in Electric Vehicle Registrations in Berlin and Brandenburg

In the past year, Berlin and Brandenburg experienced a decrease in the registration of vehicles with alternative propulsion systems. According to data from the Federal Motor Transport Authority, a total of 36,802 alternative drive vehicles were registered in Berlin in 2024, reflecting a 19.9% decline compared to the previous year, as reported by the Office for Statistics Berlin-Brandenburg.

However, it is noteworthy that the overall number of vehicle registrations in Berlin also dropped by 23.3%, totaling 63,003 vehicles. Despite this decline, the proportion of cars with alternative propulsion systems increased from 55.9% to 58.4% of all new registrations in Berlin. In contrast, the national average for alternative drive vehicles stood at 47.6%.

Vehicles categorized under alternative propulsion include electric cars, hybrids, and those powered by natural gas and liquefied gas. The registration of gasoline-powered vehicles in Berlin saw a significant decrease of 35%, while diesel vehicles experienced a slight reduction of 5.1%. Consequently, traditional combustion engine vehicles represented 41.3% of all new registrations, down from 44% the previous year.

In Brandenburg, the trend followed a similar pattern. The number of new registrations for vehicles with alternative propulsion systems decreased by 1.5%, amounting to 23,530 vehicles in 2024. Their share of total new registrations fell slightly from 48.7% to 48.5%.

Overall, 48,552 vehicles were newly registered in Brandenburg, which is a decrease of 1.1% compared to 2023. The market share of new gasoline-powered vehicles decreased by 1.1%, while diesel vehicles saw a marginal increase of 0.1%. Traditional combustion engine vehicles accounted for 51.5% of all new registrations, marking a slight rise from 51.3% in 2023.
