Elderly Hostage Declared Dead Amid Ongoing Middle East Conflict

Tue 11th Feb, 2025

In a tragic development in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, Israeli authorities have confirmed the death of Schlomo Manzur, the oldest hostage held by the militant group Hamas. The 86-year-old was reported to have been kidnapped during a violent Hamas raid on October 7, 2023, along with approximately 250 other individuals.

According to statements from the Israeli military, intelligence gathered over several months has led to the conclusion that Manzur was killed on the day of his abduction. His family has been informed of the grim news, and it has been revealed that his body is currently being held in the Gaza Strip.

Manzur's tragic story began in Iraq, where he survived the 1941 Farhud pogrom against Jews as a child. At the age of 13, he immigrated to Israel with his family, eventually becoming a founding member of the Kibbutz Kissufim, located near the Gaza border. This community is where he was taken from during the Hamas attack.

His family, which includes a wife, five children, and twelve grandchildren, is mourning his loss amidst a backdrop of ongoing violence in the region. Reports indicate that there are still 76 hostages believed to be in the hands of Hamas, with 35 of those already declared dead by Israeli officials.

This announcement comes as tensions remain high in the region, with both military actions and diplomatic efforts continuing to evolve. The Israeli army has been actively working to secure the release of hostages and gather intelligence on their conditions.

As the situation develops, the impact of these events on the families involved and the broader implications for Israeli-Palestinian relations will be closely monitored.
