A supermarket in Berlin has transformed into a testing ground for innovative shopping technology, as Edeka, a prominent German grocery chain, introduces artificial intelligence (AI) equipped shopping carts. Located in Reinickendorf, this initiative aims to enhance the shopping experience by providing customers with digital assistance through tablets embedded in traditional shopping carts.
The technology, developed by the Israeli startup Catch, offers various features including in-store navigation and product searches. Shoppers can scan handwritten shopping lists, allowing the system to guide them to the relevant items within the store. This setup not only streamlines the shopping process but also aims to personalize the experience through tailored advertisements.
Store owner Sören Görse, who operates four Edeka locations in Berlin, has equipped around 40 of the 60 carts in his 1,800 square meter store located at Eichborndamm with these tablets. This pilot project reflects a growing trend in the retail sector, where technology is increasingly integrated to meet the needs of modern consumers.
In addition to navigation and product assistance, the Catch technology plans to implement targeted advertising directly at the shelves. This feature will utilize data such as shopping routes and the time of day to display personalized offers and coupons, ensuring that customers receive relevant promotions without compromising their anonymity.
The startup, founded in 2022, has already established partnerships with various international retail entities, including the Israeli supermarket chain Tiv-Taam and the Asian conglomerate AS Watson. Catch aims to expand its reach in Germany, with plans to equip over 100 additional retail locations in the coming months, encompassing supermarkets, hardware stores, as well as drugstores and perfumeries.
This initiative not only highlights the potential for AI in transforming retail environments but also reflects the broader movement towards integrating advanced technologies into everyday shopping experiences. As these trials progress, both the retailers and consumers will be looking forward to the outcomes and the potential for wider adoption of such intelligent shopping solutions.
