Easter Bonfire in Berlin-Frohnau Canceled Due to Safety Concerns

Thu 10th Apr, 2025

The annual Easter bonfire in Frohnau, a neighborhood in northern Berlin, has been officially canceled for the sixth consecutive year. This decision has been confirmed by the chairman of the local volunteer fire department's support association, who cited safety concerns as the primary reason.

Traditionally held on Holy Saturday, this family-friendly event used to attract numerous visitors from across the Reinickendorf district. However, this year's cancellation stems from heightened fears regarding public safety, particularly in light of recent events in other cities.

Several weeks prior to the announcement, the decision was made amidst a general atmosphere of apprehension regarding potential threats, which has increasingly influenced local event planning. Concerns specifically regarding the safety of the youth firefighters involved in the event were voiced by local political figures, emphasizing the need for caution in organizing public gatherings.

The Easter bonfire has faced numerous challenges in recent years. From 2020 to 2022, the event was unable to take place due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The following year saw the cancellation due to the construction of a new fire station, which diverted all available resources. Last year, disagreements with the district office led to another cancellation.

Despite these setbacks, the chairman expressed optimism about the future, stating that all previous misunderstandings with local authorities have been resolved. He conveyed confidence that the Easter bonfire will return next year, promising a revival of this cherished community tradition.

For residents and fans of this annual celebration, the news of the cancellation is disappointing, yet the assurance of its potential return next year offers a glimmer of hope for future festivities.
