Earthquake Strikes Santorini: Thousands Evacuate Greek Island

They estimate that if a significant quake were to happen, it could reach magnitudes between 5.5 and 6.0, which poses a risk primarily to poorly constructed buildings.

Airlines have added extra flights, and ferry services have increased their capacity to accommodate the growing number of evacuees. Concerns are also mounting regarding the potential activation of the underwater Kolumbos volcano, located northeast of Santorini, which could have catastrophic consequences reminiscent of its violent eruption in 1650 that caused extensive damage across the eastern Mediterranean.
