Drosten Acknowledges Major Misjudgment on Vaccine Mandate

Sat 17th May, 2025

Christian Drosten, a prominent virologist and key advisor during the COVID-19 pandemic, has publicly acknowledged significant errors regarding the vaccine mandate for healthcare professionals. In a session before the Corona inquiry committee in the Saxon parliament, Drosten reflected on a statement made by the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in 2021, which advocated for mandatory vaccinations for medical staff.

At the time, the experts did not fully account for the reduced efficacy of vaccines against the then-prevalent Omicron variant. Drosten admitted, "This was the greatest misjudgment I was involved in." Despite this admission, he emphasized that vaccinations had nonetheless played a crucial role in significantly lowering illness and mortality rates during the pandemic.

During his appearance, Drosten's remarks elicited laughter when an AfD politician referred to him as the "architect of the Corona strategy." Drosten refuted this characterization, asserting that he had participated in only a small number of government meetings. Nevertheless, he maintained a high profile through various media channels, including television and podcasts.

He justified his consistent presence in public discussions by stating, "After 20 years of publicly funded research, it is time to give something back to taxpayers." This remark drew derisive laughter from the audience.

Drosten defended his statements made during the pandemic while acknowledging the initial data was "shaky." He cited an example from 2020 when the U.S. health authorities estimated a hospitalization rate of up to 20% among children, a figure that later proved to be inflated. He expressed relief that the actual data showed lower rates.

Concerns regarding severe long-term health consequences for children influenced the recommendations for stringent measures, though he noted these concerns were not widely discussed to avoid causing public panic. "These issues were hardly covered in the public discourse because we did not want to scare people," he explained.

The inquiry committee was paused on Friday and is scheduled to reconvene, where Drosten will be called back as an expert witness. The committee, initiated by the AfD faction, aims to scrutinize Saxony's pandemic response, particularly focusing on school closures, testing requirements, and vaccination campaigns.
