Driver Plows into Union Demonstration in Munich, Injuring 28

In a tragic incident on Thursday morning, a driver rammed a vehicle into a union demonstration in central Munich, resulting in at least 28 injuries, including children. Authorities have arrested the suspect, identified as a 24-year-old Afghan asylum-seeker, and are treating the event as a deliberate attack.

The incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. near Munich's central train station. Participants in a demonstration organized by the service workers' union ver.di were marching when the suspect's vehicle overtook a police escort and accelerated into the crowd. Emergency services responded swiftly, attending to the injured, some of whom are reported to be in serious condition.

Bavarian Governor Markus Söder expressed deep sorrow, stating, "It is simply terrible. We feel with the victims, we are praying for the victims--we hope very much that they all make it." He added that evidence suggests the act was intentional.

Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter conveyed his shock, noting that children were among the injured. He emphasized the city's solidarity with the victims during this difficult time.

The suspect was known to authorities for previous offenses related to theft and drugs. The motive behind the attack remains under investigation. This incident adds to a series of attacks involving immigrants in recent months, intensifying debates on migration policies ahead of Germany's upcoming federal election on February 23. 

The attack occurred just before the Munich Security Conference, an annual gathering of international foreign and security policy officials. Authorities have stated that there is no indication of a connection between the incident and the conference.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz condemned the act, stating that anyone committing such crimes in Germany will face severe punishment and potential deportation. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to addressing issues related to irregular migration and ensuring public safety.

As Munich prepares for the security conference, security measures have been heightened to ensure the safety of attendees and residents. The city remains on alert as investigations continue into the motive and circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
