Door Detachment Incident on Regional Express Near Mannheim

Mon 10th Mar, 2025

A Regional Express train traveling from Mannheim to Heilbronn experienced a significant safety incident on Sunday when a door detached while in motion. The event occurred as the train passed the Mannheim Arena/Maimarkt station, as confirmed by a spokesperson from the Southwestern Railway Company (SWEG).

Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the incident. The train continued its journey towards Heilbronn after making a brief stop at the Mannheim-Seckenheim station, where approximately 100 to 150 passengers were evacuated for safety reasons. Following the evacuation, the train proceeded to the main station in Heidelberg before being taken to a maintenance facility for inspection and repairs.

Details regarding the cause of the door detachment are still under investigation, and the SWEG has not released additional information at this time. The Bundespolizei (Federal Police) has also refrained from making comments regarding the incident.

Footage circulating on social media purportedly depicting the incident shows a view from inside the moving train, revealing an empty doorway where the door should have been, with the sounds of rushing wind and passing freight trains audible in the background.

This incident raises concerns about safety standards and maintenance protocols in the railway sector, especially given the potential risks posed to passengers in such situations. Regional transport authorities are expected to conduct thorough evaluations to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
