Migration Policies: Disputes Emerge Over Asylum Rights and Border Control

Recent discussions surrounding migration in Germany have highlighted a significant decline in asylum applications, with numbers dropping to approximately 230,000 in 2024, a decrease of about 100,000 from the previous year. This follows a notable increase in applications in 2023. In addition, around 20,000 individuals were deported last year, marking a 55% increase compared to 2022.

Interior Minister Nancy Faeser emphasized the importance of integration and the country's attractiveness to skilled labor and professionals worldwide, noting that immigration for skilled workers has surged by 77% since 2021. She advocated for a more constructive dialogue around future migration and asylum policies, rejecting proposals to abolish individual asylum rights in favor of quota systems for refugee protection. Faeser argued that quotas alone would not address the needs of genuine war refugees, stating that no other European nation adopts such an approach.

In contrast, Hans-Eckhard Sommer, president of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), expressed support for moving away from individual asylum rights. He suggested that a more effective approach would involve substantial humanitarian admissions, which would consider both humanitarian aspects and labor market integration capabilities. He raised concerns regarding the current European asylum system, describing it as biased towards young men from the middle class while disadvantaging women, the sick, and families.

Sommer highlighted the need for a shift in thinking, especially in light of the rising popularity of populist and far-right parties across Europe, warning that the democratic rule of law could be jeopardized. He stated that the call for stronger border protection reflects a sense of helplessness and criticized the idea of outsourcing asylum processes to third countries as impractical.

The ongoing coalition negotiations have seen the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU) pushing for policies that would allow for the rejection of asylum seekers at Germany's borders, aiming to curb irregular migration.
