In an intriguing opportunity for history enthusiasts, the former leadership bunker of the East German Ministry of the Interior, located near Freudenberg in Brandenburg, will be open for public tours this weekend. This facility, known as Bunker 7001, played a crucial role during the Cold War, designed to manage public life in East Germany in the event of a military crisis.
Completed in 1986, the bunker consists of three interconnected sections, capable of accommodating up to 200 individuals. Equipped with approximately 400 telephone lines, it facilitated communication with critical institutions such as the police, the National People's Army, and the State Security Service. Remarkably, the technical rooms and the minister's office remain well-preserved, offering a rare glimpse into the operational heart of the DDR.
According to the event organizers, the bunker was utilized for practical exercises on two occasions by the then Interior Minister Friedrich Dickel, highlighting its intended purpose during tense times. Notably, the bunker is situated just a few meters underground and had a relatively low security designation, which means it was not built to withstand a nuclear attack.
Visitors are welcome to explore the bunker on April 5th and 6th, with tours running from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The tours are designed to accommodate families, including children, and will begin with a short presentation detailing the structure's historical and technical significance. Unlike conventional tours, there are no set times, allowing guests to join at their convenience.
As attendees prepare for their visit, organizers recommend bringing sturdy footwear, warm clothing, and flashlights, as lighting within the bunker is limited. The specific location of the bunker does not have a formal address; however, directions will be provided from the village church in Freudenberg.
These guided tours occur only twice a year, making this an exceptional chance for those interested in the historical narratives of the DDR and Cold War era to engage with a significant piece of history.
