DHL Trials Unregistered Use of Packstations to Enhance Accessibility

Mon 7th Jul, 2025

DHL is initiating a trial aimed at simplifying the process of using its Packstations, allowing customers to utilize these services without prior registration. The pilot program commenced on July 7, 2025, and initially involves around 20 selected business clients.

During the one-year test phase, customers ordering from participating retailers will have the option to have their packages sent to a Packstation without having to complete a registration process beforehand. Some of the first partner companies involved in this initiative include CEWE, Mosaik Tree GmbH, FarbenFux, and BC GmbH, with plans to extend the trial to additional business clients in the coming months.

Benjamin Rasch, head of marketing and product management in DHL's German Post and Parcel sector, stated that the goal of this trial is to remove barriers associated with the registration process, making it easier for customers to send and receive packages. This simplification is particularly aimed at attracting customers who have previously hesitated to register due to the perceived complexity.

Business clients stand to benefit as well, as they can now offer their customers a convenient option for receiving packages via Packstations during online purchases. Previously, customers were required to register with DHL and complete a post-identification process along with activating their devices through the Post & DHL app to directly receive packages at these automated kiosks.

During this pilot, customers will only need to provide their chosen Packstation as the delivery address when placing an order. Once the package is deposited, they will receive a pickup code via email, significantly streamlining the process.

DHL currently operates over 15,500 Packstations across Germany, with plans to expand this number to 30,000 by the end of 2023. The expansion aims to minimize the distance consumers must travel to retrieve their packages. This network also benefits delivery personnel, allowing them to deposit multiple packages at a single Packstation rather than making individual deliveries to homes, thus saving time and reducing costs.

As of now, a substantial number of registered DHL customers--totaling in the high single-digit millions--are utilizing these Packstations. The ongoing enhancements are expected to further increase usage and customer satisfaction.
