Deutsche Bahn Extends Major Renovation Plans to 2036

Thu 10th Jul, 2025

The Deutsche Bahn has announced a significant extension of its renovation plans for critical railway lines, now projected to run until 2036. This decision follows a recent dialogue within the industry, highlighting the urgent need for modernizing over 40 heavily trafficked rail routes.

The deteriorating infrastructure has been identified as a primary factor contributing to the frequent delays experienced by passengers. The railway operator views this comprehensive renovation initiative as a cornerstone for enhancing the future of rail infrastructure in Germany.

Initially, the renovation schedule was set to conclude in 2035, but the timeline has now been extended by an additional year, pushing completion back by at least five years beyond earlier expectations. As a result, travelers will have to contend with the existing issues of an aging network for a longer period, which is likely to maintain high levels of train delays.

Industry responses to the revised schedule have been mixed but generally lean towards the positive. The Association of Freight Railways had previously expressed concerns about potential disruptions caused by over-ambitious project timelines, which could hinder ongoing rail traffic. However, the proposed extension allows for better project preparation, according to Peter Westenberger, the association's managing director.

Ultimately, the federal government will need to finalize the sequence of corridor renovations through 2036. The renovation plans were initially set in motion under the previous government, focusing on consolidating tasks to minimize the duration of complete line closures. The Riedbahn between Frankfurt and Mannheim served as the first line to undergo such extensive renovations last year.

Future closures are also planned, including a complete shutdown of the route between Berlin and Hamburg from early August to late April 2026 for comprehensive repairs. The federal budget has allocated substantial funds for these renovation efforts.

For the years 2026 and 2027, the Deutsche Bahn confirmed that the original sequence of projects will remain in place due to advanced planning stages. In 2026, planned renovations include routes connecting Hagen to Wuppertal to Cologne, as well as routes from Nuremberg to Regensburg and others. In 2027, work will focus on corridors such as Rosenheim to Salzburg and others, while renovation projects for Lübeck-Hamburg and Frankfurt-Heidelberg will be deferred to subsequent years. A new schedule is expected to be implemented starting in 2028, with proposed renovations for several other vital corridors.
