Deutsche Bahn Implements New Discounts and Reverts Cancellation Policies

Wed 28th May, 2025

The Deutsche Bahn (DB) has announced significant changes to its ticket cancellation policies and introduced new discount offers aimed at increasing passenger numbers during peak travel periods. As part of an initiative to address concerns about empty trains, the company will reintroduce free cancellation for Flexpreis tickets up until one day before the travel date, effective June 15.

Previously, under revised rules implemented in late 2024, passengers could only cancel Flexpreis tickets without a fee up to eight days before departure, a change that faced considerable backlash from customers and advocacy groups like Pro Bahn. The decision to revert to the original cancellation policy comes in response to widespread customer feedback.

In conjunction with the updated cancellation policy, the DB is also launching a series of attractive offers. Starting June 15, passengers purchasing Flexpreis tickets more than 28 days in advance will benefit from a 20% discount compared to last-minute bookings. Additionally, short-distance tickets for journeys around 100 kilometers will be available for as low as EUR6.99, with a further reduction to EUR5.24 for holders of a Bahncard.

The company is optimistic about passenger turnout during the upcoming holidays, with expectations of full trains during Ascension Day and Pentecost. Current booking data indicates a 9% increase in reservations for Ascension Day compared to the previous year, while bookings for Pentecost have risen by 4%. The DB anticipates high demand for routes connecting major cities, including Frankfurt to Munich and Hamburg to Berlin.

Moreover, Bahncard 50 holders can take advantage of a special offer, allowing them to bring a companion at the same discount rates until September 30. This initiative provides both travelers with a 50% discount on all Flexpreise and 25% off Sparpreise, potentially saving around EUR120 on a trip from Frankfurt to Munich.

The Deutsche Bahn's efforts to enhance customer satisfaction through these new measures reflect a strategic approach to boosting ridership and improving the overall travel experience.
