Demolition of A100 Bridge at Funkturm Interchange Commences

Fri 11th Apr, 2025

The long-awaited demolition of the dilapidated A100 bridge at the Funkturm interchange in Berlin has officially begun. This crucial infrastructure project is set to last until the end of April, allowing the resumption of train services on the Ringbahn by the end of the month.

The decision to demolish the bridge was prompted by a significant and previously identified crack in its structural framework, which had unexpectedly worsened. As a precautionary measure, authorities closed the bridge to vehicular traffic in mid-March, which also led to the suspension of train services on the Ringbahn line located beneath the bridge.

According to the autobahn management, the demolition work is scheduled to be completed by April 25. Following this, train operations on the Ringbahn are expected to resume on April 28. Plans for the reconstruction of the bridge are currently in development, but specific details remain unspecified.

This demolition marks a significant step toward ensuring the safety and reliability of transportation infrastructure in the area, which has been a concern for local commuters and residents. The bridge's deterioration had raised alarms regarding public safety, necessitating immediate action.

Authorities have assured the public that they will be kept informed about the progress of the demolition and subsequent reconstruction efforts. The aim is to minimize disruption to traffic and public transport as much as possible during this period.
