Voting Commences in Delhi's 2025 Assembly Elections
Polling has officially commenced in New Delhi for the pivotal assembly elections, where voters are tasked with selecting representatives for 70 seats in the regional legislature. This election is particularly significant as it features a fierce contest among major political players aiming to shape the future of India's capital.
The incumbent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), led by Arvind Kejriwal, is facing challenges of anti-incumbency after holding power for a decade. Meanwhile, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is attempting to reclaim control of the city after a 27-year absence. Additionally, the Indian National Congress, which has formed an alliance with AAP and other opposition parties in preparation for the upcoming general elections, is also competing vigorously.
Polling began at 7 a.m. local time and is set to conclude at 6 p.m. Results from the election are expected to be announced on February 8. More than 15 million residents are eligible to cast their votes in this highly anticipated electoral event.
Leading up to the elections, political parties have engaged in extensive campaigning, featuring rallies, roadshows, and various public engagements. Both Kejriwal and Modi have aimed to attract voters by promising enhancements in public services, including improvements to educational institutions, health services, and financial assistance programs for low-income families.
Kejriwal has emphasized the importance of voting, appealing to citizens to consider their choices as crucial for their families' futures. Similarly, Modi has characterized the elections as a celebration of democracy, encouraging widespread participation.
Despite criticisms regarding the effectiveness of Congress's campaign, the party has ramped up its efforts in the final stretch, with prominent leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi participating in numerous public events.
In the previous assembly elections held in 2020, AAP secured 62 out of 70 seats, leading to Kejriwal's reappointment as chief minister. However, he has been embroiled in legal controversies, including an arrest last year related to allegations of corruption in the allocation of liquor licenses, which he and his party vehemently deny. Following his release on bail, Kejriwal stepped down, and Atishi Marlena Singh, a former education minister, assumed the role of chief minister.
This election coincides with Modi's participation in the Maha Kumbh Mela festival in Uttar Pradesh, underscoring the high stakes and political significance of the ongoing electoral process.
