Challenges for Tesla in Germany

Recent trends indicate a significant decrease in the interest of German consumers towards purchasing Tesla vehicles. This downward shift appears to be linked to the actions and statements of Tesla's CEO, Elon Musk. Data from the Danish market research firm Caliber reveals that since last summer, the appeal of Tesla has been waning among potential buyers in Germany. This decline coincides with Musk's public alignment with the U.S. Republican Party, which has sparked controversy and criticism.

Declining Popularity

In August 2024, 31% of Germans considering a car purchase were contemplating a Tesla. However, this figure plummeted to 16% by January 2025, coinciding with Donald Trump's inauguration as President. Although there was a slight recovery to 20% in February, the overall trend reflects growing disinterest.

Falling Electric Vehicle Registrations

Moreover, Tesla's new vehicle registrations in Germany have also seen a downturn. In 2023, over 63,500 Tesla vehicles were newly registered, but that number dropped to around 37,600 in the following year. While uncertainties regarding government subsidies may play a role in this decline, the share of Tesla models in total electric vehicle registrations has also diminished.

Elon Musk's Controversial Behavior

The term "behavior of Musk" encompasses several actions that have raised eyebrows. His vocal support for Donald Trump during the U.S. election campaign drew criticism even in a deeply divided political landscape. Following the election, Musk's various public outbursts and his rising status as one of Trump's closest allies have compounded negative perceptions. Incidents such as his controversial gestures and online disputes have provided detractors with ammunition against purchasing Tesla vehicles.

Growing Scrutiny from U.S. Democrats

In addition, Musk's involvement in government matters has come under increased scrutiny. On March 17, prominent members of the Democratic Party called for an investigation into potential corruption and conflicts of interest relating to Musk's role in U.S. governmental agencies. This inquiry aims to determine whether Musk's position as a special government advisor has led to any financial conflicts of interest, particularly concerning contracts awarded to his company, Starlink, by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The Importance of Electric Vehicles for Germany

For Germany, the promotion of electric vehicles is crucial in achieving climate protection goals. European nations are striving to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in both industrial and private sectors. However, Germany has been criticized for lagging in the development of necessary infrastructure. The government aims to establish one million charging points by 2030, yet as of February 1, 2025, only 125,400 standard charging points and approximately 36,280 fast-charging points were operational according to the Federal Network Agency.
