A devastating car bomb explosion occurred on a major roadway near the northern Syrian city of Manbij, resulting in the deaths of at least 15 individuals, as reported by local civil defense authorities. Among the deceased, 14 were women, primarily farm workers who were traveling in a vehicle adjacent to the site of the blast, while one man was also confirmed dead. Additionally, 15 other women sustained injuries from the explosion.
The incident took place against the backdrop of ongoing conflict in the region, which has been marked by clashes between the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and Turkish-backed groups since the uprising that led to the ousting of Bashar Assad's regime in December. The situation in Manbij has been particularly volatile, with this attack being part of a worrying trend of car bombings in the area.
This latest explosion marks the second such attack within a span of three days, following an earlier incident that resulted in four civilian fatalities and nine injuries. Munir Mustafa, deputy director of the White Helmets, described this bombing as the seventh in Manbij over a period of just over a month, highlighting the alarming frequency of violence targeting civilians.
Mustafa emphasized the grave implications of these attacks, stating that they pose a significant threat to civilian safety during a time when the population is struggling to recover from the prolonged impacts of the Assad regime's 14-year rule. He noted that such violence exacerbates the humanitarian crisis, disrupts agricultural and educational activities, and further deteriorates living conditions in the region.
Manbij, located approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles) south of the Turkish border and adjacent to the Euphrates River, has become a focal point for multiple armed factions vying for control, complicating the already dire humanitarian landscape. The absence of any immediate claims of responsibility for the latest attack only adds to the uncertainty and fear permeating the city, as residents grapple with the ongoing threat of violence.
As this situation unfolds, the international community watches closely, with calls for increased efforts to stabilize the region and protect vulnerable populations from further harm.
