CSU Calls for Expert Commission on Care Reform in Upcoming Government

Tue 11th Mar, 2025

The leader of the CSU parliamentary group in the Bavarian state parliament, Klaus Holetschek, has urged the incoming federal government to establish a commission of care experts. This request comes in light of the recent coalition negotiations between the CDU and SPD, which have shown a commitment to initiating a major reform in the field of care.

Holetschek highlighted the pressing issue of underfunding within the care insurance system, emphasizing the need for immediate action. He pointed out that stabilizing the care insurance system should be a priority, advocating for the partial assumption of non-insurance-related expenditures, simplifying budgets, and reducing bureaucratic hurdles.

Furthermore, he stressed the importance of conducting a thorough review of the social insurance systems to assess their financial health. Holetschek proposed the formation of a care commission that would include a diverse group of practitioners, enabling a comprehensive approach to addressing the challenges faced in the care sector.

As coalition talks progress, the urgency of these discussions is apparent. The leadership of the CDU has expressed unanimous support for entering into negotiations aimed at forming a coalition government with the SPD, following similar endorsements from both the CSU and SPD leadership.

The recent exploratory talks concluded without providing detailed commitments regarding care reform, although both parties have acknowledged the necessity of a significant overhaul in this area. The coalition agreement is expected to spark further debates, especially given the long-standing concerns about the sustainability of the care insurance system.

With the establishment of a care-focused commission, stakeholders hope to engage not only care professionals but also family caregivers, who play a crucial role in the care landscape. The call for reform reflects a growing recognition of the complexities surrounding care provision in Germany and the urgent need for a collaborative approach to ensure a sustainable and effective care system.
