Transcendental Meditation on health and creativity

Transcendental Meditation (TM) is a simple, easily-learned, effortless technique practiced for 20 minutes twice daily.

The TM technique is easy to learn and enjoyable to practice -and is not a religion, philosophy, or lifestyle. Over ten million people have learned it, people of all ages, cultures, and beliefs.

When you meditate, TM allows your mind to effortlessly settle inward through quieter levels of thought until you experience the most silent and peaceful level of your awareness -pure consciousness, your innermost self.

At the same time, the body gains deep restorative rest, more profound than sleep. This unique state of "restful alertness" allows emotional, mental, and physical stress to wash away--improving overall health, well-being, and behavior.

By effortlessly transcending during TM, we experience the most settled state of awareness - a reservoir of creativity, intelligence, and happiness. The direct experience of this expansive consciousness satisfies our ceaseless quest for happiness and infuses joy into all our perceptions.

With regular practice of the TM technique, many people find that they spontaneously find more happiness through meditation and are naturally more present and engaged.

Can meditation increase serotonin?

Studies show that TM can also help alleviate depression, which is often associated with low levels of the hormone serotonin. Daily TM practice has been found to increase the levels of serotonin, in people whose serotonin is too low.

A study led by researchers at the University of California Los Angeles showed that depressive symptoms decreased by almost 50% over a 12-month period among people practicing the Transcendental Meditation technique, compared to other forms of meditation and Mindfulness.

TM Improves Emotional Stability

People learn the TM technique for many different reasons - deeper relaxation, improved memory, reduction of blood pressure - but perhaps the most widely appreciated benefit is getting along better with others.

Even just a few days after learning the TM technique, meditators report they feel less stressed, have greater patience, and are more light-hearted, caring, and compassionate.

Gain Confidence From Within

Gaining power and confidence from within is a solid foundation for self-esteem that is not based on circumstances or approval from others. And yet, changing the way we feel about ourselves through the direct experience of our inner being is also a subtle, effective way to change how others perceive us.
The research behind Transcendental Meditation and increased creativity are extensive. Over 50 years of global scientific research demonstrates that Transcendental Meditation significantly improves brain functioning and mental performance.

Positive Effects of TM on the Brain:

  • Improved brain functioning and performance.
  • The best meditation for creativity and improving intelligence.
  • Better decision-making and problem-solving abilities.
  • Improved ability to focus.
  • More orderly, positive thinking.
  • Increases energy.
  • Improved relationships.
  • Increased self-confidence and self-actualization.
  • Can help reduce PTSD symptoms and other stress-related conditions.

How does TM produce these benefits?

The regular practice of the TM technique produces a healthier brain.

Neuroscientists have found that the brain produces high-power alpha waves during TM practice. This distinct brain pattern corresponds to the state of relaxed inner wakefulness-serenity, expansion, and bliss. The brain's executive judgment seat is strengthened when the alpha waves synchronize.

When the brain is more coherent and integrated, all the different parts communicate better, working together better. This is the basis of improved mental performance-better memory, increased creativity, broader comprehension, and sharper focus.

No other meditation technique has consistently produced alpha coherence throughout the brain. Researchers have found that the experience of "transcending" restores neurological balance, inner silence, and clarity of mind. (ref: Cognitive Processing, 2010)
