Denmark incidence rising rapidly

Corona numbers are currently on the rise in the popular German vacation destination of Denmark. According to Statens Serum Institut (SSI), 1284 new infections have been recorded in the country in the last 24 hours alone (as of July 28, 2021). This is the highest number of new infections since May 21, 2021. Looking at the positive rate of corona tests, it is even the highest value since January 2021, according to the portal Politiken. What does this mean for vacations in Denmark?

Of the 80,295 PCR tests performed, 1284 were positive on July 28, 2021. This results in a positive rate of 1.62 percent, the highest since January 13, 2021, according to the Danish portal Politiken. The incidence in Denmark is currently 88.9 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days, according to corona-in-zahlen.de.

Among those infected are people who have already been vaccinated once against the coronavirus. According to Politiken, 22 percent of those infected with the delta variant had been vaccinated at least once. As a result, Torben Mogensen, chairman of the Lung Association and a longtime anesthesiologist, believes that "first-time vaccinations do not protect very well against the delta variant." However, Mogensen said, even initial vaccination protects against severe disease progression.

Despite the many new infections and the high incidence, the number of infected people who currently have to be treated in a hospital is comparatively low. Currently, 64 people are hospitalized in Denmark due to Corona infection. Ten patients are in intensive care - five have to be ventilated.Torben Mogensen attributes this to vaccinations. "It has something to do with the fact that so many are vaccinated," he believes. Regarding the low burden on hospitals, he also told Politiken, "In the hospital system, these patients don't play a role. There are so few who need to be admitted as inpatients."In Denmark, 52.3 percent of the population is currently fully vaccinated against Corona, according to Politiken. At least a single dose of vaccination has already been received by 70.9 percent of all Danes.

Already since July 25, 2021, Denmark is again considered a so-called risk area, according to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). For entry into Denmark, vacationers must present proof of complete vaccination, recovery or a negative test result. Holidaymakers must also observe a number of things when returning to Germany.

When returning from a risk area, entry into Germany must be digitally declared. Those who do not want to be quarantined must present a negative PCR test before crossing the border or no later than 48 hours after entry. This is reported by the ADAC. Recovered and fully vaccinated people are exempt from this rule.In Denmark itself, there are currently few restrictions despite the high incidence. Thus, stores, restaurants and bars are open. However, a closing time of 2:00 a.m. applies in restaurants. A mask obligation exists only for public means of transport.
