Concerns Rise as Palestinian Booksellers Arrested in Jerusalem

Mon 10th Feb, 2025

In a recent incident in East Jerusalem, Israeli police apprehended two Palestinian booksellers from the Educational Bookshop, which focuses on literature pertaining to Palestinian culture and history, as well as the ongoing conflict with Israel. The arrests were made amid allegations of selling books containing inciting content and promoting terrorism.

According to a police spokesperson, the individuals were detained after complaints were lodged regarding the nature of the books available in the store. Imad Muna, the owner of the Educational Bookshop, reported that police officers entered the establishment on Sunday afternoon, citing concerns over specific book contents.

The police proceeded to translate the titles of the books, written in both Arabic and English, utilizing Google Translate. Approximately 100 books were confiscated during the operation, although most of the titles have since been returned, with only around ten remaining in police custody. Muna's son Ahmed and his brother Mahmud were also taken into custody during the police action.

Steffen Seibert, the German ambassador to Israel, expressed his dismay at the situation through a post on a social media platform. He described his appreciation for visiting the Educational Bookshop and acknowledged the Muna family as peaceful and proud Palestinians who are open to dialogue and intellectual exchange. Seibert conveyed his concern regarding the recent raids and the detention of the two booksellers.

The police reported that several books with "nationalistic Palestinian themes" were identified during the raid, including a children's coloring book titled "From the Jordan to the Sea." This phrase, often used in protests, references the territory between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea. While some interpret this slogan as an expression of solidarity for those fighting against the Israeli occupation, it is viewed by others, including the Islamist group Hamas, as a call for the eradication of the state of Israel.

The two detained booksellers are currently being held at a police station in Jerusalem and are expected to appear before a judge later today. This incident comes amid ongoing tensions and a complex political landscape in the region.

The Educational Bookshop has long been a platform for Palestinian narratives and cultural expression, further complicating the dynamics surrounding freedom of speech and expression in the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The situation continues to evolve, drawing attention both locally and internationally as advocates for Palestinian rights and cultural representation seek to address the implications of such actions.
