Allegations of Desertion Among Ukrainian Soldiers Raise Concerns
Recent reports indicate that approximately 1,700 Ukrainian soldiers may have deserted, with some allegedly leaving during their training period. This situation has raised alarms regarding the effectiveness of the Ukrainian military's recruitment and training processes.
As Ukraine continues to fend off Russian aggression, the need for robust military forces is critical. However, independent military analysts have criticized the Ukrainian leadership for various missteps in the establishment of new military units. The situation has prompted questions about the overall organization and effectiveness of the military under the current administration.
According to journalist Jurij Butussow, the newly formed 155th mechanized brigade, which was established as part of a collaboration with France, has faced significant challenges. Reports suggest that before the brigade even saw combat, 1,700 of its soldiers deserted. Alarmingly, it is claimed that 50 of these soldiers deserted while still in training in France. During the brigade's formation, which commenced in March 2024, an additional 2,500 soldiers were initially assigned to the brigade only to be reassigned to other units shortly thereafter. Furthermore, the brigade leadership reportedly struggled to conduct adequate training exercises with their troops while in France.
Once deployed in eastern Ukraine near the city of Pokrowsk, the brigade, which nominally comprised 5,800 personnel, was critically short of essential equipment, including drones and anti-drone systems. The lack of proper resources has reportedly led to high casualty rates among the brigade's ranks. Butussow has directly attributed these issues to poor organizational management by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, and Commander-in-Chief Olexander Syrsky.
Bohdan Krotewytsch, Chief of Staff of the National Guard's Azov Brigade, has questioned the circumstances surrounding the desertion of 1,700 soldiers from a newly created unit that was reportedly equipped with Western arms. As of now, the military has not publicly addressed these serious allegations.
In a related political development, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, a prominent member of the Free Democratic Party (FDP), expressed her expectations for the CDU leader Friedrich Merz ahead of the upcoming federal elections. Strack-Zimmermann believes that Merz has the opportunity to become a significant chancellor by adopting policies that contrast with those of the current Chancellor Olaf Scholz, particularly in terms of supporting Ukraine more robustly.
Throughout the tenure of the so-called traffic light coalition, Strack-Zimmermann has been vocal in her criticism of Scholz's approach to Ukraine, particularly regarding the delivery of German weaponry. Her calls for increased military support reflect the ongoing debates surrounding Germany's role in the Ukraine conflict.
