Cologne is ramping up security measures as it prepares for the upcoming street carnival starting this Thursday. The local police department has announced that over 1400 officers will be on duty, reflecting increased vigilance due to recent incidents of violence in the region.
Police Chief Martin Lotz has indicated that the current security situation is more tense than in previous years, primarily due to a series of attacks that have occurred in recent months. To ensure maximum safety for revelers, all available police personnel will be mobilized throughout the city.
Although there are no specific threats reported, Chief Lotz emphasized the importance of preparedness. Key areas of focus will include the Zülpicher Viertel, the Ring Boulevard, and the Old Town, which are expected to attract large crowds. Additionally, the Kölner Synagogue will have enhanced protection measures due to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
In response to rising knife-related incidents, law enforcement will be implementing stricter controls during the festivities. A ban on knives will be enforced at all public carnival events to ensure the safety of participants.
Similar measures are being adopted in Düsseldorf, where police have also committed to deploying a significant number of officers. Police Chief Thorsten Fleiß highlighted that ensuring the safety of festival-goers is their top priority. Measures such as a glass ban in the Old Town, a weapons ban zone, and increased video surveillance will be in place to enhance security.
In Mainz, local authorities have recently updated their safety protocols for the carnival period. The city's safety standards are reportedly at a high level, according to Mainz's public order director, Manuela Matz. Following recent events, security plans for major gatherings have been revised, with adjustments made where necessary to bolster safety.
The street carnival, particularly the festivities surrounding Weiberfastnacht, is anticipated to draw hundreds of thousands of attendees. The highlight of the celebrations will be the Rosenmontagszüge, or Rose Monday parades, taking place the following Monday, culminating the vibrant carnival experience before the observance of Ash Wednesday.
