In a daring escapade that could have ended in disaster, six young individuals were apprehended by the Cologne police while attempting to climb the iconic Cologne Cathedral during the night. The group, which consisted of five young men from France and a woman from Belgium, had aimed to conquer the heights of the cathedral's northern tower under the moonlight.

Authorities reported that the incident occurred late at night when the cathedral's security team noticed unusual activity. Alerted by the private surveillance system, which captured the climbers equipped with headlamps, the security personnel quickly contacted the local police. As law enforcement surrounded the area, a helicopter unit was deployed to monitor the climbers as they descended from the tower.

Upon entering the cathedral, police found several doors that appeared to have been forcibly opened, alongside abandoned backpacks containing climbing gear. The climbers, aged between 18 and 27, were processed by the authorities and required to post bail. The investigation, led by the criminal police, is currently focusing on charges of trespassing and property damage.

During the police operation, officers confiscated a camera, a mobile phone, and a lock-picking tool from one of the climbers, a 27-year-old man. These items are expected to be crucial in determining the full extent of the incident and any potential motives behind the unauthorized climb.

The Cologne Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is renowned for its stunning Gothic architecture and towering spires, making it a popular landmark for both tourists and locals. However, climbing its towers without permission poses significant risks not only to the climbers but also to the integrity of the historic site. Local authorities have emphasized the importance of respecting safety regulations and the need for vigilance in protecting cultural heritage.

The incident has sparked discussions about the measures in place to ensure the safety and security of such iconic structures. While thrill-seeking behavior among young adventurers is not uncommon, officials are concerned about the potential dangers of unauthorized access to high-risk areas.
