In a concerning incident, a child and a young man fell through the ice of frozen waterways in Berlin, prompting urgent rescue operations by the local fire department. The events unfolded on Monday evening, when the Berlin Fire Department received reports of a child who had fallen into the Neukölln Shipping Canal.
The incident occurred around 6:45 PM, near Ziegrastraße. Responding swiftly, 36 emergency personnel were dispatched with rescue equipment and vehicles. Fortunately, the child was rescued from the canal before the fire department arrived and was subsequently taken to a hospital under medical supervision.
Shortly thereafter, at approximately 7:15 PM, the fire department was alerted to another emergency involving a young man who had fallen into the Dahme River in Köpenick. He was able to pull himself out of the water before rescue teams arrived, although he was also transported to a medical facility for treatment.
The Berlin Fire Department has issued a strong warning against venturing onto frozen bodies of water, emphasizing the inherent dangers involved. They stated that it is nearly impossible to accurately assess the strength of ice, which can lead to life-threatening situations.
In cases where individuals fall into freezing water, rapid onset of hypothermia can occur, posing severe health risks. The fire department urges the public to remain vigilant and avoid walking on ice during winter months.
If someone falls through the ice, it is crucial to call emergency services immediately by dialing 112. The fire department advises that anyone attempting to assist should prioritize their safety to avoid becoming a victim themselves. They recommend using available rescue equipment, such as life rings, ropes, poles, or even long branches or scarves, to assist the individual in distress.
As colder weather persists, residents are reminded to stay safe and be aware of the risks associated with frozen waters.
