Delay in Child Benefit Increase Leaves Parents Concerned
As the new year begins, families in Germany are facing unexpected delays in receiving the increased child benefit payments that were anticipated for 2025. The government approved a rise in child benefit, raising the monthly payment to EUR255 per child, but parents will not see this increase reflected in their January payments.
The child benefit hike was part of a broader relief package approved by the Bundesrat at the end of last year. While the new amount is set to provide an additional EUR5 per child, many families will continue to receive only the previous amount of EUR250 in January, leading to frustration and confusion.
The delays stem from the late approval of the measure following the dissolution of the ruling coalition, which impacted the timely implementation of the new rates. The Federal Ministry for Family Affairs has assured families that the adjustment will be retroactively paid, meaning parents can expect a total increase of EUR60 per child over the course of 2025, despite the initial delay.
In addition to the child benefit increase, the government has also implemented a rise in the child supplement for low-income families, which is now EUR25 per month. However, the maximum child supplement for those in financial need remains unchanged at EUR292 per month, depending on individual income and wealth situations.
The proposed introduction of a comprehensive child basic security system, which would consolidate child benefit and other family support measures, has not materialized as planned. This has raised questions about the future framework of family assistance in Germany.
The child benefit increase received bipartisan support in the Bundestag, indicating a collective recognition of the need for enhanced financial support for families. Supporters of the measure argue that it will significantly benefit families and the working middle class, providing essential relief in challenging economic times.
