Growing Up in the East: Chemnitz Band Blond Reflects on Childhood Memories at the Pool

Thu 17th Apr, 2025

The indie-pop group Blond, hailing from Chemnitz, has opened up about their nostalgic summer days spent at the local swimming pool, where childhood mischief and camaraderie flourished. Sisters Nina and Lotta Kummer fondly recall their youthful antics, including a playful tradition involving chocolate that often left their peers with sticky shoes.

In a recent podcast episode on RBB Radio, the sisters shared amusing stories from their childhood, including how they would 'container' food--rescuing edible items from supermarket waste. This practice allowed them to enjoy an abundance of sweets, which they humorously used to play tricks on their friends at the pool. Nina reminisced about how those who annoyed them would find a surprise waiting in their shoes after swimming.

Despite the heat of summer, which could reach scorching temperatures, the sisters found joy in their simple pleasures. They were often seen with an impressive stash of chocolates, considering themselves the 'richest kids in the world' when they managed to salvage a significant amount of goodies. However, as the temperature soared, they would often share their finds with friends they liked, reinforcing bonds through shared experiences.

Growing up in Chemnitz, the sisters expressed a strong attachment to their hometown. For them, summer vacations meant spending every day at the pool, with the idea of traveling elsewhere seeming unnecessary. Their fondness for Chemnitz remains unchanged, as they both continue to reside in their beloved city. Yet, as adults in their twenties, they admit that sometimes escaping the confines of Chemnitz feels refreshing.

Nina articulated her excitement about touring, noting the thrill of being in a space filled with like-minded individuals. The sisters have openly discussed their experiences growing up in East Germany, shedding light on both the challenges and delights of their upbringing. They expressed a desire for environments where people are welcoming and share similar values, emphasizing the importance of community.

Through their music and personal stories, Blond continues to resonate with many listeners, drawing from the rich tapestry of their experiences growing up in Chemnitz and highlighting the unique cultural landscape of East Germany.
