Berlin - Legal proceedings have commenced against Atallah Younes, a 23-year-old influencer, following an incident during New Year's Eve celebrations in Berlin where he reportedly fired a rocket into a residential apartment. The Berlin public prosecutor's office announced on Wednesday that Younes faces charges of attempted arson, attempted bodily harm, and property damage.

The prosecutor's statement indicated that Younes allegedly aimed to attract significant media attention through his actions, prioritizing his personal interests over the safety and property of others. According to the authorities, this reckless behavior posed a serious risk to the well-being of individuals nearby.

In a video shared on social media, Younes can be seen igniting a firework and directing it toward a multi-family dwelling. The projectile broke through a closed window and detonated inside the apartment, causing damage to furniture in the bedroom. Fortunately, a resident quickly disposed of the burning remnants from the window, averting further disaster, and no injuries were reported.

Following the incident, Younes deleted the original video and subsequently expressed his apologies to those affected in another post. He remains in custody as authorities express concerns over potential flight risk.

The charges against Younes carry severe penalties. If convicted of attempted arson, he could face a minimum of one year in prison, while charges of attempted bodily harm could result in at least six months. Property damage offenses might lead to monetary fines.

Younes, who is a tourist from the West Bank, was apprehended by federal police upon his arrival at Berlin Brandenburg Airport. He has been in pre-trial detention since his arrest as the investigation continues.
