The renowned celebrity hair salon chain Marlies Möller has officially declared bankruptcy. The Hamburg District Court has initiated insolvency proceedings concerning the assets of Marlies Möller Holding GmbH, appointing attorney Jennie Best as the provisional insolvency administrator, as reported by the law firm involved.
With over six decades in the business, Marlies Möller has built a reputation as an internationally recognized hair expert, serving high-profile clients including Hollywood star Denzel Washington and designer Jette Joop. The bankruptcy affects five of its premium salons--three located in Hamburg, one in Hannover, and one in Düsseldorf. However, two additional locations under the Marlies Möller brand in Hamburg-Pöseldorf and Mallorca are not part of the insolvency proceedings.
Currently, the company employs 75 staff members. All salons are expected to remain operational during the insolvency process, with existing appointments proceeding as scheduled.
The financial difficulties faced by the company are attributed to its inability to recover from the revenue losses experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with the ongoing economic impacts stemming from the Ukraine conflict. Simultaneously, operational costs have continued to rise, creating a challenging environment for the business.
The insolvency of Marlies Möller is part of a broader trend affecting the hairdressing industry, where many salons are struggling to maintain profitability. The brand, which also offers beauty services and product lines, has positioned itself as a leader in its field. Marlies Möller herself began her career in Hamburg in 1954, opening her first salon in 1962. Since then, she has crafted looks for major fashion events in New York, Paris, and Milan, and has appeared on television as a style expert.
Marlies Möller Holding GmbH was founded in Schwerin in 2001. The provisional insolvency administrator is currently assessing the company's financial situation and has already commenced a structured process to seek potential investors, aiming to secure the future of the salons and the jobs of its employees.
